Saros Keeps Returnal's Chaos and Throws Out Its Cruelty
The Shield That Changes Everything
Returnal asked you to die and start over with nothing. Saros asks you to die and come back stronger. That single design shift — permanent progression between deaths — is the foundation of Housemarque's next PS5 exclusive, and it's the clearest signal yet that the Finnish studio heard what players loved about Returnal and what drove them away.
The core loop will feel familiar to anyone who survived Atropos. You play Arjun Devraj, a Soltari Enforcer voiced by Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher), investigating a lost colony on the planet Carcosa. The combat is pure Housemarque: third-person bullet hell where the screen fills with projectiles and your survival depends on reading patterns at speed. But the headline mechanic is the Soltari Shield — a defensive tool that absorbs incoming fire and converts it into power weapons channeled through Devraj's arm. You're not just dodging the chaos; you're eating it and spitting it back.
Harder by Choice, Not by Default
Where Returnal's difficulty was a wall you either climbed or walked away from, Saros builds ladders — and lets you kick them away if you want. A permanent upgrade tree powered by Lucenite currency lets you buff weapons and suit capabilities between runs, so each death makes the next attempt less punishing. Biome runs clock in at 20–30 minutes, roughly half the length of Returnal's marathon stretches. And you can fast-travel to any biome you've already reached instead of fighting through from the start.
The smart part is how Housemarque handles the hardcore audience. "The whole goal with the permanent progression isn't to trivialise the game, it's just offering more agency," says Matti Hälki, one of the game's design leads. Carcosan Modifiers let you stack positive buffs — faster reloads, more damage — but force you to accept negative tradeoffs like reduced Lucenite retention or faster Corruption buildup. And if you want the full Returnal experience, you can disable permanent unlocks entirely.
That flexibility matters because Returnal's commercial performance, while solid, was modest for a first-party PS5 exclusive — roughly a million copies sold. Brilliant game, limited audience. Saros is Housemarque's attempt to keep the brilliance and widen the door.
A Returnal Reunion on a New Planet
The Returnal DNA runs deeper than mechanics. Jane Perry, who voiced Selene Vassos in Returnal, returns as NPC Sheridan Bouchard. Ben Prendergast from God of War: Ragnarök plays Jerome Jackson. Creative Director Gregory Louden calls Saros their "biggest and most ambitious story yet," with narrative delivered through cinematics, conversations, and Soltari Hologram logs scattered across Carcosa.
The game went gold on April 1 — and Housemarque felt the need to clarify it wasn't an April Fool's joke, which tells you something about the state of game development timelines. The original March 20 launch was pushed back six weeks, but reaching gold a full month before release suggests the extra time was well spent.
At $70 for a PS5-exclusive roguelike, Saros is a bet that Housemarque's name carries weight. After Returnal proved they could build one of the best action games of the generation, the question was never whether they could do it again — it was whether they could do it again and bring more people along. Permanent progression, shorter runs, and customizable difficulty suggest the answer is yes. Whether they've kept enough edge to satisfy the players who loved Returnal precisely because it was punishing — that's the question Carcosa will have to answer.
